Part of the reason that national trails are being created is to create connections between the land and humans. The CDT is one of those trails traversing north from the Mexico border to Canada. Gateway communities across the United States are integral to outdoor recreation, and to national trails. Gateway communities along the Continental Divide Trail provide support in many ways. First, many business support hikers along the way. Additionally, these communities provide personnel, both volunteers and paid employees, to steward the trails. This effort is the community.
Crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic and natural disasters have taken a toll on many of the gateway communities. If you can consider a visit to a gateway community, like Silver City, NM and take advantage of the great outdoors. If you can’t, supporting these gateway communities from afar is important to the preservation and stewardship of the trails.
